Quentin Tarantino knows that he's carved out a solid place in the annals of Hollywood's greatest auteurs. And with his most recent release, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood, boasting a massive box office and critical acclaim, Tarantino has suggested that the DiCaprio-Pitt film could be his last.

In a recent episode of Pure Cinema Podcast, Tarantino joined hosts Elric Kane and Brian Saur to discuss a series of directors' final films. "Most directors have horrible last movies. Usually their worst movies are their last movies," the director explains. "That’s the case for most of the Golden Age directors that ended up making their last movies in the late ’60s and the ’70s, then that ended up being the case for most of the New Hollywood directors who made their last movies in the late ’80s and the ’90s."

With Hollywood coming out in 2019 and no new directorial projects on the horizon, that leaves the question: would he mind Hollywood being his final flick? In short, not at all. Tarantino said, "Most directors’ last films are fucking lousy. Maybe I should not make another movie because I could be really happy with dropping the mic on Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood."

Tarantino has one hell of a directorial line up, as well. With only nine official films in the canon (if you're not counting his 2007 Grindhouse double-feature with Robert Rodriguez), 2015's The Hateful Eight is his "worst" rated film, with a 74 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Seventy-four! Hollywood, for the record, comes in at second most profitable, only behind his 2012 film, Django Unchained. But an important reminder is that Tarantino has long said that he will only direct 10 films. That leaves one in the chamber (which could be allegedly be a Star Trek? Or Kill Bill 3?). A couple years ago, he said of his final film, "If you think about the idea of all the movies telling one story and each film is like a train boxcar connected to each other, this one would sort of be the big show-stopping climax of it all. And I could imagine that the 10th one would be a little more epilogue-y."

As for whether the oddball director would actually hang his cowboy hat up on number nine is yet to be seen, but if you're going to make a conscious choice about when to call it quits, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood is one killer final release. No pun intended.
